7 Weeks & Counting

Nooo -- this is not a pregnancy announcement!

Tomorrow it will be seven weeks since Jordan fell out of a second story hotel window.  The first three or four weeks we took it easy & Jordan used that time to heal. He knew his limitations and was tired easily.  It was certainly an adjustment going from having a busy schedule to just hanging out at home or at my parents.  It took a lot of creativity and ideas to keep Jordan entertained with limited use of television.  There was no church or school or any of the other activities he was involved in. After about three weeks Jordan was cleared to play with his friends, which he was excited about. Play dates were set up, and it took less work to keep Jordan busy :)

The doctors at the hospital told us upon release that Jordan could resume all normal activity in 5-6 weeks.  When Jordan had his follow up appointment with his pediatrician, he recommended that Jordan cannot play on play structures or ride a bike (anything that could cause him to fall) and no jumping for three months following his fall.  This seemed daunting but we have made it this far ... mostly :) It is proving to be quite difficult to prevent Jordan from jumping. Jordan's energy has come back and sometimes he is bouncing off the walls! David and I agreed to let Jordan go back to church as the play structure in the nursery area is safe for little ones and low to the ground.  That gives Jordan one a day a week to see his friends & burn off some energy the way he used to :)

It has been wonderful to see how well Jordan and Lucas are getting along.  I was nervous when I thought of how long Jordan would be home and how much time the boys would be spending together. Thankfully, they have grown closer together and really enjoy playing with each other. Lucas is old enough to mostly keep up with Jordan and they somehow communicate (Lucas is not talking a whole lot). Jordan actually will come & tell me what Lucas wants.  How he knows, I have no idea. I think he just decides for Lucas what he wants :) With Jordan a leader and Lucas a follower, they compliment each other really well.  Lucas does know when he does not want to do what Jordan says, so he will go do his own thing and ignore his big brother!

Here are pictures from a trip we took the to the beach.  It was a great day and Jordan had so much fun having the freedom to just play!

Lastly, thought this video would be amusing. I am working on teaching Lucas sign language so he will stop yelling as a form of communication. It's actually helped since he can communicate the things he wants most - more (food), please (instead of just yelling at me), and thank you. You can hear Jordan in the background - he's Lucas's coach ;)

Phil 4:13

Background: This is from notes my mom wrote when I was in the hospital. I remember none of this :)

I was born 16 days late via emergency c-section due to distress. I had meconium aspiration. There were problems immediately as they tried to save my life. It was decided that I would be transported to Children's Hospital.  I wound up in the NICU for two months. It was a long hard struggle for me. I was on medication for low blood pressure, which was later switched to a medicine for high blood pressure. I was also on morphine. I was put on a drug for a month that paralyzed me.  The oxygen was pumped into me at such a high rate the doctors were worried it would blow a hole in my lungs.  My lungs collapsed a few times. At a month old I was taken off the medicine. It was the first time my parents had seen me awake. Throughout this process, my parents were told that I had a 20% chance of living and if I did live, there would be a host of problems. I could be crippled, mentally retarded, etc.  From the moment I was born until I went home (on Good Friday), there were people all over praying for me. I was a 'miracle' baby.

When I was 13 months old, my parents found out I was deaf.  They are not sure if it was because of medicine I had while in the hospital that could have burned the nerves in my ear or if it was from the 106 fever I had at 10 months. Either way, all I can remember is this, being deaf.  I have a 92% hearing loss, which means I hear 8% of what 'normal' people hear. With my hearing aids I hear 50%. When I tell people about my disability, I simply say I am hearing impaired because to others, being 'deaf' means not talking, hearing & knowing sign language. (I took ASL as a foreign language, easiest class ever!) At 18 months, I started going to a school for the hearing impaired where I went for seven years. I got hearing aids, I learned how to listen, speak, all that fun stuff.  I wear hearing aids in both ears and I pray never break b/c I do not know how we'll afford a new set.  I had speech therapy for 18 years. I spent a lot of time learning to say "Sally sells seashells by the sea shore" and "How much wood can a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood".  You know, since you walk around saying tongue twisters all the time. :) I still have to keep myself in check, and my parents STILL, at 30 years old, correct me.  And, at 30 years old, I still roll my eyes and say "whatever, you know what I mean". My mom says if she knew I would be deaf, she would have given me a different name :) I think I was 14 the first time I said my name without any hesitation or stumbling. Stacy Speck (maiden name). I was so happy when I got married & became a Thompson.

So that's the background.

I grew up in a Christian home.  I accepted Christ into my heart when I was 8 years old. My parents had given me a Bible & I was a voracious reader. I think I read the whole Bible, because it was a Children's Bible. One night I was reading the Bible when my mom came in because it was bedtime. I do not remember all the details but she asked if I wanted to ask Christ to come in my heart.  This is where it gets hard.  At that time, what went through my head were two verses.  Matthew 7:7 & Mark 7:31-37. Ask & ye shall receive. Jesus healed the deaf & mute man.  As you can imagine, my childhood was not easy. I was teased, bullied, I struggled.  I wanted so badly to hear. When I asked Christ into my heart, I thought He would heal me.  Obviously, He did not answer that prayer the way I wanted Him to.  I'm not sure of the time frame between asking Christ into my heart & this next event because I always thought it was the next morning, but in writing this out, I remembered that my bed was in one spot when I asked Christ into my heart, and when this happened, my bed was in another spot, under the window.  This was a big deal because my mom was very against me moving my bed there so it was a victory to have my bed where I wanted it. Weird way to remember it I know.  One morning, I don't know when, but I was still 8 years old, I woke up & I could hear noise. I rushed out to my mom & said mom I can hear!  Either she pointed it out or I remembered - I had fallen asleep with my hearing aids in (normally I sleep without them).  I was devastated. I was heartbroken, I was crushed.  In those short moments, I thought God answered my prayer & healed me. When I realized that He didn't, I was mad. Angry. Hurt. Any emotion you can think of, I felt. For the next eight years, I rebelled against God & my parents. I harbored so much anger and hurt & built up a wall. I refused to be vulnerable, I refused to cry. (I still refuse to cry).  I refused to let others see how hurt I was. I refused to let God work in me. I didn't want to go to church, I tuned out when listening to sermons. I did enjoy the songs though. I didn't read my Bible.  Even in those years, God was working on me, no matter how much I fought it and refused to acknowledge it. In eighth grade, I knew the crowd of girls I was hanging out with, wasn't a good crowd. I knew if I went to the local high school, I would most likely start doing drugs. That's how much pain I was in. I asked my parents if I could go to a Christian high school so they found one & I went there.  When I turned 16, I went to winter camp with my high school.  It was there that God broke through my walls & I rededicated my life to Him.  I became the class chaplain my senior year & had to pray (out loud) at my graduation. That was a big moment for me.  After so many years of speech therapy and being taught to look people in the eye when they or I am speaking (it's disconcerting when someone's staring at your mouth), I looked up from my 'prayer/speech' and saw people's head bowed.  ... praying. Right. That's what happens when people pray, they bow their heads! I must confess that my nerves went away immediately when I realized no one was looking at me :)

I won an award at my graduation (I can't remember what it was - something about overcoming adversity) and the verse on it was Phil 4:13.

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

That has become my life verse.

After I rededicated my life to Christ, it still took 10 years before I was baptized.  I argued with anyone who said that Christians needed to be baptized. There was still one wall I was keeping up. To me, being baptized showed me at my most vulnerable. Not for the emotions of it, but the simple fact that, I had to take out my hearing aids in order to be dunked underwater. It was terrifying to me. Every time I felt Christ nudging me to be baptized, I would turn a deaf ear (pun intended). The decision to be baptized was far more emotional than the actual baptizing. It meant trusting and obeying God, stepping outside of my carefully constructed bubble.

Looking back to where I was & where I am now, I can confidently say, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.  I have been learning (still learning) not to let my disability define me. I have learned to just explain to others that I cannot hear well instead of pretending that I do and missing a lot of what's going on. I was pleasantly surprised at how much nicer people are if you politely tell them, "I'm sorry, I'm hearing impaired. Would you mind looking at me when you say that". I used to be terrified that people would be rude and mean. I did not want anyone to know that I was not "normal".  Seriously, all you have to do is hear me speak & you know something's up. I've been asked many times where I'm from. It's always a fun conversation & it cracks me up when people don't believe me. "Where are you from?" ... "Upland" ... "yes, but where did you originate from".  I say "I was born and raised in Southern CA", "ok, but where are you from? Australia?".  Then I explain that no, I'm hearing impaired, which always gets an "ohh." and sometimes "I knew you had an accent, but I just couldn't place it".  Australia seems to be the most common one, but I've been asked if I'm from England, Sweden, New York (or Boston), and the South.  Sometimes I really wish there was a deaf country or deaf land.  "Yes, I'm from deaf country, hence the accent" hehe.

Do I still have areas that I let hinder me? yes. I have a mental block about talking on the phone. I'm capable of it, but it freaks me out. I literally freeze when my cell rings and I stare at it, going "pick it up, you can do it, pick it up, you can do it" and I never do. (Unless it's my husband or my mom).  Even if God called me on the phone, I would not pick up! I would wonder why, with all the ways He can communicate, did he choose the darn phone.

Four years ago, I became a mom for the first time. Jordan was 3 weeks early, so I think for two months, I had to wake Jordan up every 3 hours at night to nurse him. You would never know because when I slept ... I slept hard. I took out my hearing aids and could fall asleep in a second. I had to trust my husband in a way most women don't - I had to trust him to hear the baby & wake me up.  Scary thought isn't it, especially as a new mom? From the very beginning, I had to learn to 'let go'. If I didn't, I would be following him around from room to room, taking him to the bathroom with me, etc.  I trusted other people to listen for me. I'd put him down in the pack n play at a friend's house and say "if he cries, let me know".  Even now, at play dates, I'll hear a kid and ask "is that mine or yours?".

If you've met my boys, you know one thing: they are LOUD. Especially the little one. Pint sized with a big voice. Boys can be loud, but ... still. I used to feel bad and apologize for how loud my boys are. At one point I worked with Jordan on not yelling for me in the house, b/c I was embarrassed that he was yelling at other people's houses. This backfired on me one time when Jordan got stuck somewhere and was quietly calling for me ... so we made a new rule. You may only yell at home :) I learned to be thankful for how loud they are and to not apologize. Yes, they are loud, and yes, God blessed me with that.

If I didn't let go in those early days a new mom, not only would I be robbing my boys of their independence to grow and learn, away from me (even in other rooms of the house as I blow dry my hair and cannot hear them), I would be trusting myself & not Christ. I had to acknowledge my limitations, deal with them the best I could, and trust Christ with the rest.

I still struggle. I still have moments when I'm mad & hurt.  Especially when I'm in situations that are hard for me.  By leaning on Christ and in trusting Him, He has given me the strength & courage to deal with it.  I remember Phil 4:13.  I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Happy 4th Birthday Jordan!

To my big boy ~

You are four years old today! As I read through the birthday letters I've written you for the past three years, it is an amazing way to see how you've grown.  It has not been an easy journey, but it has been a worthwhile one. We go head to head often, our tempers flaring and staring each other down. There have been tears and frustrations, apologies and hugs.  Sometimes when I feel like I just cannot do this anymore, you give me a silly look or a sweet smile. You can have me in stitches and you delight in making me laugh.  There are times I look over, wiping tears from my eyes, to see you sitting there, laughing hard alongside me, just because you made me laugh.

You are teaching me to be the kind of mommy you need.  You revel in affirmation and get grumpy after too many 'no's.  You love to help me with chores and I have been learning to let you help.  When you ask me to play with you, it means you simply want me near you, not actually play with you (because I do not make the right voices or I put the car in the wrong spot). You know the rules of our household and your eyes light up and your mouth drops open when I let you 'break' one of them.  I can hear you as you go running to your daddy yelling "Mommy said yes!!".

You have your father's smarts and sense of humor. You have his looks and his stubbornness.  You have his knack for pushing buttons. You have your momma's temper and attitude (strong will, bossy, smart mouth).  You are sweet, kind and loving. You are always willing to drop what you are doing to give a hug and kiss. You love to curl up in my lap & be read to. You love to run fast and play hard. You love to laugh and be tickled.  You love cars, trucks, playing in the dirt and jumping in puddles. You love to go for walks and often ask to push the stroller.  You love being with your friends and your face lights up when you find out there's a play date. You are my tough yet cautious one. You fall, get back up and brush yourself off.  You take time to assess the situation.  You are factual as well as imaginative.  If I am asking you too many questions about your day, you simply tell me to be quiet and leave you alone.  You speak what's on your mind and I know where I stand with you. You ask 'why' often and challenge me to come up with answers.  Thankfully, sometimes an "I do not know" is sufficient.  You have begun to pray at bedtime. I love hearing what's on your heart, even when it's being thankful for airports and cars :)

You are a wonderful big brother.  You give Lucas hugs (and squeeze him really hard).  No one can get him to laugh his deep belly laughs the way you can.  You love to tell other people you have a baby brother named "Wucas".  There are times you tell me to leave so you can be 'in charge' of watching Lucas.  It is amusing to hear you tell him what he can & cannot do ... rules that you do not always follow yourself :) At night when Lucas is being put to bed, you like to come in and sing him the goodnight song.  As the two of you get older, I see your friendship growing.  One of my favorite times is watching you two play together in the play area in the early morning.  It makes my heart so happy :)

I heard this song recently and loved it. Your daddy listened to it and agreed with me: this song, Jordan, is you and me kiddo.  I love you and I love seeing God's love grow, heart to heart.

Heart to Heart by Toby Keith

I watched him throw his oatmeal bowl
Halfway across the kitchen floor
His momma said don't let me see you do that anymore

And he let loose with a cup of orange juice
Right down the back of her dress
Without a doubt she lined him out
Then cleaned up the mess

Now he is just a chip off of the old block
Just like me we keep her on her toes a lot

But when he cries she'll match him tear for tear
When he laughs she'll grin from ear to ear
When he's wrong they'll stand there face to face
She can put him in his place
Side by side and hand in hand
She'll talk with daddy's little man
He knows that she's done her part
I'm watching God's love grow
Heart to heart

He'll grow to be six foot three
Yeah he's gonna be just like me
He'll be tall and play football
But he'll always be a momma's boy

And when he cries she'll match him tear for tear
When he laughs she'll grin from ear to ear
When he's wrong they'll stand there face to face
She can put him in his place
Side by side and hand in hand
She'll talk with daddy's little man
He knows that she's done her part
I'm watching God's love grow
Heart to heart

We're Still Here!

2013 is here and I have not posted since Lucas's first birthday in November! It feels like every time I sit down to write, one of the boys conveniently decide that they are hungry (I cannot even begin to imagine what they will be like as teenagers), wake up from their naps, bring a toy for me to fix or tend to a owie.

Lucas is 14 months now!  He started walking at 12 1/2 months and is pretty good at keeping up with his big brother. Other times he stays in Jordan's way a split second too long & gets knocked over.  Our little one is starting to say more words and signs 'more' and 'all done'. He says hi, bye, mama, dada, yes, no, ball, and usually tries to repeat a word that is said.  Right now he loves to wave & say hi to the cat.  I have learned that Lucas is our quiet & sneaky one.  When I am busy with Jordan is when Lucas seizes the opportunity to get into something he knows he's not allowed to, which is mostly the cat food & the bathroom.  When I figure out what Lucas is doing, he greets me with a big grin & laughs.  Thankfully he does not get upset when I take him away & happily goes to play elsewhere, but I still need to keep an eye on that one!

After months of Lucas staying the same weight, we finally realized it was due to his diet & digestion issues.  Since changing his diet, he is a much happier little man who eats a ton & has put on weight. YAY!

Jordan is doing well in school & AWANA. Today his teacher said he had a fantastic day at school, which brought such joy to this momma's heart! He likes to be active (what else is new?) so I am working on keeping him involved when I do chores.  It requires a little (ok a lot) more patience on my part, but I have noticed that it helps keeps both him & myself happy!  Jordan's desire for independence continues as he often times tells me what he needs to do and "I do it all myself!". Many times I will hear him tell Lucas that he can or cannot do something.  "Wucas, that is not for you! You go see Mommy".  (why Jordan thinks Lucas has to see me, I do not know).

I tried to take a video of Lucas walking around, but Jordan was around.  So this was the result!

I love my boys. This shows their personalities so well :)

In grownup news, David & I are going away to celebrate our 30th birthdays.  He turned 30 in December & I am turning 30 in a week (ish).  All I need is a white picket fence & my childhood dream of my life at the age of 30 would be complete! :)

Happy 1st Birthday Lucas!

November  2011
November 2012
My little one, you were prayed for for so long & God answered faithfully in His perfect timing.  You complete our family so wonderfully.  It has been a joy to watch you grow this past year.  Over the past few months your personality has started to emerge in a big way.  Your smile may be slow in coming, but when you smile, your whole face lights up & everyone smiles with you.  Your laugh is infectious. You have a gentle spirit and a quiet stubbornness.  You already know how to throw a tantrum when you do not get your way, but you move on quickly once you realize no one is paying attention to you :)

Lucas, you are my snuggle bug, which I adore.  My heart simply melts when you lay your head on my shoulder & pat my back. It makes those 4:30 am wake ups worth it to hold you close to me & rock you back to sleep.

You love socks. You are the sock monster - I find stray socks all over the house & can never find the matching one! From the time you started crawling, you would have a sock in your hand.  Your daddy & I joke that all you need to be happy is a pair of socks, one in each hand (a non matching pair!).

Playing with Jordan's toys is your favorite thing to do & you love it when he plays with you.  It makes my heart so happy when I see you light up when your big brother comes into the room.  You are teaching Jordan to be gentle when he plays with you and Jordan is teaching you to hold your own.  My continual prayer is that you two will grow up to be best friends.

At a year old you:

* are saying hi, bye, mama, dada.  A lot of what you say is "ba ba ba ba"
* are just about walking
* can pull yourself up to a standing position
* love smoothies
* wave
* love music & dance (bounce up and down) when you hear the first notes
* dislike being in the car (hopefully that changes!)
* love being in the stroller for walks
* love to eat waffles & muffins (you love bread)
* enjoy baths
* are fascinated with the vacuum cleaner & follow me all over the house when I'm vacuuming
* love to play peek a boo

Happy Birthday my handsome little one.  Although this year has gone by so quickly, I look forward to the next stage of your life as a toddler!

Highlights

After an interesting summer (Jordan got sick twice & was housebound both times, camping was postponed by a month, finally went camping only to leave the campground a day early due to Lucas having a cold & refusing to sleep), fall arrived with a bang.

Only picture of the four of us from camping

Jordan started at his new preschool in September.  He goes three mornings a week & loves it.  There was a bit of a transition period but we got through it.  I love that the school is five minutes away, which gives me time to get stuff done in the mornings (especially since Lucas naps during that time).  Ok, most mornings I get stuff done.  Some mornings I just catch up on tv shows or take a nap :)

In addition to preschool, Jordan also started attending AWANA, a program at our church.  He is loving the extra time to be with his friends from church & enjoys memorizing bible verses.  He is excited to be a Cubbie & wear his vest :)

This year for Halloween Jordan has decided to be Jake from the Neverland Pirates & Lucas is a puppy. This picture was taken on our way to a church event on Saturday.  This is the first year Jordan's been into the experience of wearing a costume so it's been fun to see him get so excited about it.  Lucas tries to take off his headpiece every chance he can get :)

Speaking of the little one, I cannot believe he is turning a year old in a few weeks! Lucas is crawling & cruising all over the place.  He loves to walk around with help & has even take a few very wobbly steps on his own.  He adores his big brother & follows him everywhere, wants to eat what he's eating, play with what he's playing with, etc.  Lucas is our non-cautious one.  Toy on the floor? He'll dive off the bed or couch to get it.  A rock on the other side of the wall?  Climb over it & topple into the dirt to get the rock.  Jordan's on top of our backyard play structure? Try to climb up the slide unsuccessfully multiple times.  This little one is also going to keep us on our toes!

Chatting on the phone & not looking too happy that I interrupted him

Earlier this month, we went to the Pumpkin Patch.  We tried so hard to get that "must have" pumpkin patch picture that every parent gets.  This is Lucas on the verge of crying & Jordan is done with my constantly telling him to "sit & smile, just one more time".  Ah, memories :)

David and I volunteer at AWANA every Sunday & we are involved in a small group at church.  In addition to that, I also keep busy with the moms ministry.  David continues to be on the worship team & teaches music lessons once a week.  Next week is our 7 year anniversary & we are so thankful for the life God has blessed us with!
